Question
What do the noble scholars and jurists of Islamic law say about the following: If something gets stuck between the teeth while fasting, and a person swallows it by mistake, will his fast be nullified?
بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
اَلْجَوَابُ بِعَوْنِ الْمَلِکِ الْوَھَّابِ اَللّٰھُمَّ ھِدَایَۃَ الْحَقِّ وَالصَّوَابِ
If the thing stuck in the mouth of a fasting person is a small amount, i.e., it is smaller than a chickpea, the fast will not be nullified if it is swallowed by mistake or intentionally, even if one remembers that they are fasting. However, if that thing is a large amount, i.e., equal to or more than a chickpea, mistakenly swallowing it or swallowing it intentionally will nullify the fast if one remembers that they were fasting. Qada’ (making up) of the fast will also be necessary.
Thus, it is stated in Bada’i Al-Sana’i:
و لو بقي بين أسنانه شيء فابتلعه ذكر في الجامع الصغير أنه لا يفسد صومه، و إن أدخله حلقه متعمدا، روي عن أبي يوسف أنه إن تعمد عليه القضاء و لا كفارة عليه ووفق ابن أبي مالك فقال: إن كان مقدار الحمصة، أو أكثر يفسد صومه و عليه القضاء و لا كفارة كما قال أبو يوسف - رحمه اللہ تعالى -، و قول أبي يوسف محمول عليه، و إن كان دون الحمصة لا يفسد صومه، كما لو ذكر في الجامع الصغير، و المذكور فيه محمول عليه و هو الأصح ووجهه أن ما دون الحمصة يسير يبقى بين الأسنان عادة، فلا يمكن التحرز عنه بمنزلة الريق، فيشبه الناسي و لا كذلك قدر الحمصة فإن بقاءه بين الأسنان غير معتاد فيمكن الاحتراز عنه فلا يلحق بالناسي

It is stated in Tanwir Al-Absar Ma’a Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar:
(ابتلع ما بين أسنانه وهو دون الحمصة) لأنه تبع لريقه، ولو قدرها أفطر

وَاللہُ اَعْلَمُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ وَ رَسُوْلُہ اَعْلَم صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم
(Allah Almighty knows best and His Messenger صَلَّی اللہُ عَلَیْہِ وَ اٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم knows best.)
