Ruling On Entering the Washroom While Wearing a Ta’weez

Question

   What do the noble scholars and jurists of Islamic law say about the following: If one has a Ta’weez around his neck or arm, can they enter the washroom with this Ta’weez or must it be removed?

بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

اَلْجَوَابُ بِعَوْنِ الْمَلِکِ الْوَھَّابِ اَللّٰھُمَّ ھِدَایَۃَ الْحَقِّ وَالصَّوَابِ

   Entering the washroom while wearing a Ta’weez wrapped in cloth, rexine, leather, etc., around the neck or arm is permissible and not sinful; however, removing it is better.

   It is stated in Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar:

رقیۃ فی غلاف متجاف لم یکرہ دخول الخلاء بہ والاحتراز افضل

(Al-Durr Al-Mukhtar, Vol. 1, p. 355, Publ. Dar Al-Ma’rifah, Beirut)

   It is mentioned in Majma’ Al-Anhur:

   ولو كان ما فيه شيء من القرآن أو من أسماء اللہ تعالى في جيبه لا بأس به وكذا لو كان ملفوفا في شيء لكن التحرز أولى

   My master, A’la Hazrat, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan عليه رحمة الرحمن writes in Fatawa Razawiyyah:

   تعویذ موم جامہ وغیرہ کرکے غلاف جُداگانہ میں رکھ کر بچّوں کے گلے میں ڈالنا جائز ہے، اگر چہ اُس میں بعض آیاتِ قرآنیہ ہوں اور اس احتیاط کے ساتھ پاخانے(واش روم ) میں لے جانا بھی جائز ہے، ہاں افضل احتراز ہے۔

   Translation: Coating a Ta’weez by wax and wrapping it in a cloth, then hanging it around a child’s neck is permissible, even if it contains some verses of the Qur’an. Taking it into the washroom with care is also permissible; however, refraining is better. (Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 4, p. 608, Publ. Raza Foundation, Lahore)

وَاللہُ اَعْلَمُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ وَرَسُوْلُہ اَعْلَم صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم

(Allah Almighty knows best and His Messenger صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم knows best.)
