Question

What do the noble scholars and jurists of Islamic law say about the following: Does drawing blood to check blood glucose levels nullify wudu?

If blood comes out from any part of the body besides the ‘Sabeelain’ (the excretory passages), there is a specific rule that determines whether the wudu is nullified or not. If the amount of blood that comes out can flow, then the wudu will be nullified. If that amount cannot flow, then the wudu will not be nullified. Usually when checking blood glucose, the blood that is drawn is enough that it can flow and will therefore nullify wudu. On the other hand, if the blood drawn for the test is such that cannot flow, then the wudu will not break.

‘The amount that can flow’ means that the blood itself has the ability to flow from its original wound to such an area on the body which is necessary to wash in wudu or ghusl. Just having the ability to flow is enough, it is not necessary for it to flows in actuality.

In Al-Fatawa Al-Alamgiri it says:

(Al-Fatawa Al-Alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. 12-13, Publ. Karachi)

In Radd Al-Muhtar it says:

(Radd Al-Muhtar, Vol. 1, Pg. 292, Publ. Peshawar)

It further states:

(Radd Al-Muhtar, Vol. 1, Pg. 285, Publ. Peshawar)

The Imam of Ahl Al-Sunnah, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan علیہ الرحمۃ discusses about the amount of blood that can flow and says:

Translation: Flowing is the blood emerging from the wound and moving/running down (from its original place), or even if something prevents it from moving/running, it is enough that had the prevention not been there, the blood would have moved/run down. This situation will break wudu according to the Ijma’ (consensus) of our scholars. (Fatawa Razawiyah, Vol. 1, Pg. 281, Raza Foundation, Lahore)
