Question

What do the noble scholars and jurists of Islamic law say about the following:

(1)    Did the Noble Prophet ever carry a funeral, i.e. is it proven that He () carried a funeral bier on his shoulder?

(2)    Did a funeral take place for Khadijah Al-Kubra’

Answer

Answer to the first question:

The Beloved Prophet carried the funeral of Sa‘d Bin Mu‘aaz This is proven from the books of hadith. For example, Muhyi Al-Sunnah, ‘Allamah Husain Bin Mas‘ood Al-Baghawi Al-Shafi‘ee

Translation: The Messenger of Allah carried the funeral of Sa‘d Bin Mu‘aaz (Sharh Al-Sunnah, vol. 5, Chapter: Walking with the funeral, p. 337, Publ. Al-Maktab al-Islami, Beirut)

This narration is taken from a collection of hadith. This same narration was also accepted by a large group of jurists and included in the chapter of "Carrying the Funeral".

Answer to the second question:

When the mother of the believers, Khadijah Al-Kubra’ رضي اللہ تعالى عنها passed away, the command for performing the funeral prayer had not yet been legislated. Therefore, her funeral was not conducted in the common manner. The renowned Sirah biographer, Abu ‘Abdullah, ‘Allamah Muhammad Bin ‘Abdul-Baqi Al-Zurqani Al-Maliki

Translation: Khadijah رضي اللہ تعالى عنها passed away in Makkah three years before Hijrah (migration), and according to another opinion four years before, and according to a third opinion, five years before. She was buried in Al-Hajoon at the age of sixty-five. At that time, the funeral prayer wouldn’t be performed over the deceased. (Sharh al-Zurqani ‘Ala Al-Mawahib, vol. 4, p. 376, Dar Al-Kutub Al-‘Ilmiyah, Beirut)

The Imam of Ahl-Us-Sunnah, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan

Translation: In reality, the scholars have written in the books of Sirah that the funeral prayer was not performed over ‘The mother of believers’ Khadijah Al-Kubra’ رضي اللہ تعالى عنها, as at that time this prayer had not yet been legislated. The command of it came after this. (Fatawa Razawiyah, vol. 9, p. 369, Raza Foundation, Lahore)

(Allah Almighty knows best and His Messenger صَلَّی اللہُ عَلَیْہِ وَ اٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم knows best.)
